No need for Windows or Internet Explorer, it is a Network Camera,

The BL C1A is listed as “requiring” both Windows and Internet Explorer. After some experimenting, it looks it does not, and is perfectly usable with Ubuntu or indeed any OS and Firefox. No need for Windows at all.

So, for anybody else who wants to use the BL C1A camera with something other than Windows here is how.

First, ignore the shiny Windows CDROM in the box. Input the camera into your router with your network cable they do not supply one! and plug in the power supply. Wait a minute. If your router is 192.168.0.1, the camera should default to 192.168.0.253 or 192.168.1.253 for a 192.168.1.1 router, etc.

From Firefox on the local network just go to the IP addess of the camera as above followed by ?Mode=local and you may want to get the camera’s fitted web server. The mode=local is essential, to activate it. Create an admin userid/password, hit enter. That is it.

Configuring the cameras for static addresses, different ports etc is all done via the web interface after that point, so still does not need Windows or IE .

With some lines written in the manual they could drop the Windows/IE prerequisite.

Camera works nicely, and so does emailing, and the viewnetcam dynamic dns service after some a fight with router settings. One warning: you can not test the viewnetcam service from the same network that the camera is on, so before you think it is not working attempt it from elsewhere!

Camera does the job good for the price, one point subtracted for not having any non Windows installation information.

I has been impressed with the quality of this camera for the price. I’m now using it as a remote baby monitor. It was cheaper than the video monitors they sell for babies, and it is more versatile once I”m done using it for that function. The best part of it’s the back end functionality, but in general it is a nice camera. Many points:

    1. Causes you may be able to set the camera up to send photos via email or FTP whenever motion is sensed, or at a regular interval. I am saving photos on my web server whenever the baby moves with ten minutes between each snapshot, , then I have a job that creates a time lapse movie at the end of each day. Useful? Not really, but pretty cool despite.

    2. Web Server The web server is hard, will include authentication, and is easy to configure for inexperienced users.

    3. Image quality The image quality throughout the day is amazingly good but keep in mind this is not a big lens camera, it is a webcam. Do not expect your 640×480 pictures to appear like they were taken with your digital camera. Instead, think camera phone but somewhat better. Surely good enough. Motion video is remarkable. I do not know how it seems from a bandwidth perspective, but I am guessing the wireless variant of this camera could be comparable. “Color Night Vision” is a joke, though. It does change amazingly well in low light conditions, but in general you need light. If you have a dim room, the image is literally black.

Again, in general I am impressed with the camera and feel it is a good value.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

Bought this camera and got it installed in no time. Camera pictures are clean, and low light pictures are good. That surprised me giving the price. It is totally configurable by web browser, and I have adjusted settings and viewed pictures via explorer seven and fire fox.

The issues I have with this camera is its documentation and remote access over the net. Documentation is weak and if you run into config problems..you’re dead. Unless you’re versed in network configuration etc. I thought I was till I came across this camera..boy that took awhile. Accessing it over the internet requires configuring my router to let port forwarding etc.

As for to get emails..?..I’ve still to get one with pictures. The only emails I get is its reports of how many pix it takes everyday. I really wish that I have better support someplace for this side and I could be good.

But again, over the local lan.Its great.

Customer review from the Vine™, Program What’s this?

When I got our 1st video monitor, I wondered if it could be useful, or just a gimmick, or another way to worry about the baby! we have found it useful. There are just many things that an audio monitor can not tell you. And being able to check on your child without the disturbance of going into her room can save many of trouble, particularly in the transition times in the evening and in the morning, when little commotions can lead to bigger ones.

The video was particularly useful when our child was a little older and moving around more, and we had left her to settle herself which on occasion can seem like crying herself to sleep! : We used the video monitor to see if she was just unsettled so we much didn’t want to go into the room, or she would not learn to settle herself or had gotten into a spot she could not get out of stuck in the bars of the crib, or lost her lovey, so we required to go in and set things right. Video monitors are useful to see when a child is awake, and how awake sitting, standing, lying down or trying to climb out of bed! or on her way to sleep, or not. And they may be lots of fun, too, to watch and listen!

Our other monitor is analog, and once in a while we’d hear our neighbor talking on their cordless phone which no doubt means they hear us sometimes! A digital monitor, like the Levana, should be private and static free.

So, I really wanted to like this product. Plus, I really needed it when a new baby arrived. But while it has an nice design and many interesting features, the Levana Babyview monitor does not seem particularly workable or useful for us.

The major issue, of course, is the video and audio quality. Both are problematic on the Levana BabyView:

Video: The video quality looks barely adequate. The resolution on the baby’s face is OK, but just. The frame rate looks too low you do not get anything like uninterrupted motion. Every some number of seconds, the video freezes. From time to time, it freezes for a much longer time. The video compression used results in a blocky, low resolution quality, though luckily that mainly affects low contrast regions. In general it is tolerable but not particularly enjoyable to use, and lower quality most of the time than our analog monitor.

Audio: The audio had a pervasive high pitched background whine when it was on. As well, it is seemingly set to switch off and on at low volumes, so the audio is intermittent with lots of clicks, which is less than useful and more than irritating. The tiny microphone is in an odd place on the camera, it nearly looks like an afterthought, possibly that is part of the problem. In general, lower quality than our analog monitor.

Further, the user can better control the audio have a microphone that picks up low level sounds, and have a volume control on the handset that you may adjust, then the user can choose what to hear. Good quality audio can add many of info to how the child is doing. You do not want to lose audio quality to get video a monitor like this should have good quality audio and video.

Some parts of the Babyview are well done:

The design is pretty nice and compact. Handset is 5.8″ H with the antenna x 1″ deep without the clip x 2.5″ large.

The 2.3″ screen is reasonably big.

The auto switching between regular light and night vision looks to happen quickly and effectively.

The lithium ion battery in the handset is the best battery technology, by power for the weight. It’s what is used in digital cameras and cell phones. They assert over four hours of battery life.

The power adapters work at US or international voltages.

The included clamp for the camera is well made and looks probably to work well in a range of setups.

Other features are good ideas that do not work well in practice:

The voice activation feature, which leaves the screen and the sound off till it picks up many sound, helps conserve battery and possibly parents’ nerves and sleep. But it needs too much sound to switch on it is either set to too low a level, or the microphone is not sensitive enough. And again, this is something that the user can change.

The little curved base is smart, but does not work that well at the optimum focal range of five feet. When placed on a dresser beside the crib with the camera is tilted down enough to see the baby, the base blocks a big part of the image. Also, when the camera is in the base, the camera starts to tilt caused by the heavy filter on the power supply wire a biggish black cylindrical part on the wire. So for both those reasons, the cute smart magnetic base is not much use in practice.

Some of the features seem possibly nice but I am not sure I’d use them like the nightlight and the music. I nearly wonder if they added them to distinguish this product from their security cameras.

Finally, there are a couple elements of the design that are not so great. Having a bright green power LED on the front of the camera is thoughtless on a baby monitor, though luckily it is easy enough to tape over and there are so many lovely colors of electrical tape these days. And the glowing red night vision lights seem to have too much possible for diverting or upsetting a child.

The wireless frequency is 2.4ghz, the same as wireless internet and many cordless phones. The Levana has enough channels 32, with auto signal hopping that intereference should not be a big problem, but I can not certainly evaluate that now.

The company’s web site is ., though there is little information there. Their parent company is SVAT Electronics, which makes security cameras and the like. So though this is a new product from an not known brand, they do have experience with this sort of thing. Possibly their next generation of this product will have many of the wrinkles ironed out.

The most vital factor about these devices aren’t having any dropped receptions, etc. Carrying a video signal wirelessly looks like a pretty hefty task. The Levana Babyview20 INTERFERENCE FREE Digital Wireless Video Monitor does a great job carrying a consistent signal, I have not experienced any big freezes or losing video signal. But, I did notice many brief pause when there is fast motion throughout night vision, but it’s brief.

The night vision works well. The camera holds nine infrared lights. In the black, you may be able to really see it glowing red, but it’s pretty dim the green power LED is brighter, hopefully, that is not something that could scare the baby at night. You may be able to see the real infrared lights throughout the video I have uploaded, but it’s really not that bright, that’s how the digital camera sees it not to the human eye. But from the video, you may be able to just get an idea of how much infrared lights are in there. As indicated by Levana, the infrared lights are 100 safe to the baby.

There is a VOX Voice Operated eXchange feature, which lets the monitor to be off and only turns on when there’s sound detected for example when the baby starts crying on the camera. This is a nice feature, but it could have been nice to be able to change the sound sensitivity to detect lower sounds.

The monitor comes with a rechargeable Lithium ion battery. As indicated by Levana, it takes three hours to completely charge, blue LED means it’s charging and when it goes off, it means completely charged. The camera requires four AAA batteries not included if you do not connect it to an AC adapter. Levana claims the camera can operate for 4.5 uninterrupted hours with AAA batteries. And about half if you use the night light So clearly, it is best to have an outlet close the camera to use the AC instead or make sure to purchase many rechargeable AAA batteries.

On the left side of the monitor, it has a PLAY/STOP, NEXT, and VOX button.

On the right side of the monitor, it has ON/OFF dial which also controls the volume, and light UP/DOWN button above it. The power adapter jack is on the right side bottom.

Below the LCD screen, it shows the POWER/LINK/VOX/MUSIC indicator, there is also an audio level display between them with green LEDs. And of course, there is the speaker below it.

That’s all it’s. It’s really basic and simple.

Takes about three seconds for the monitor to turn on

There is four levels of light.

Three lullabies may be played on the camera. You may be able to play/stop/next from the monitor.

There’s a Night Light switch on the camera, which just turns on three star shaped lights on the camera.

The camera comes with two mounts. One is for clamping on a crib and the other is a magnetic cradle. The cradle is really pretty nice, which will let you to rotate the camera in many directions freely with ease.

Careful with the magnetic cradle! The magnet is pretty strong, so you will want to keep sensitive electronics, particularly hard drives away from it.

Sure, in today’s HD world, it’d be nice to have everything in great quality. But, higher quality videos will clearly take higher bandwidth to transmit and more battery power. The video quality is pretty much what one could expect with low end/average webcam. It is not awful, but you must be realistic. In general, it is decent since you may be able to still tell what you are looking at.

    Pros:

Good range for around the house 100 150ft

    Haven’t lost any reception.

Design is fit for a baby’s room.

Pretty close to real time about approx 0.5 second delay not a big big deal

    Night Vision works great.

    Night light

Monitor may be clipped on to your belt or as a stand

Comes with two AC adapters for powering camera or charging monitor

    Basic, easy to use.

    Cons

No color adjustments, you get what you get. Webcam quality

Could use wider lens to see surroundings. Perhaps have an add on to attach easily to screw on to the lens

There should be a button on the monitor to turn on/off the night light.

The camera could use rechargeable lithium batteries like the monitor.

Can change sound sensitivity for VOX

Could be really nice to have an auto panning/zooming capability

    Sound can echo.

I give this product a three 1/2 stars, but will be a bit easy and give it a 4, since I haven’t tested other baby monitors.

Customer review from the Vine™, Program What’s this?

The Levana Babyview20 is certainly not a distinctive idea, but the way its been implemented may be considered distinctive. How many of us want to see and listed to our babies? My wife just newly had our second child, so testing out this product was easy.

In addition to being just a regular video monitor, the Babyview20 offers music, a night light, night vision, and almost static free audio overall, not bad. Both the monitor and the camera can run off of batteries, though power adapters are included.

When we 1st setup the unit and tested it out, we were quite happy with the quality. Since our daughter is so young, we simply placed the camera in her bassinet. If your child is older, you may be able to use the included attachment to attach the camera to a crib side. In general, quality was good, we could hear her breathe, and all was well. Setup was certainly a breeze.

During successive uses, but, we ran into many issues. The monitor started to lose its connection to the camera. Flipping off the monitor and turning it back on, powering the monitor with the power adapater, and switching batteries in the camera did not make a difference. I has been forced to call Levana, which offered friendly buyer support. I was told to simply hold the “VOX” button which is a mode that will only turn the monitor on if audio comes from the camera and hold down the night vision button on the camera. After doing this, lo and behold, things started working again. Either way, if you run into the issue, hopefully this may help prove to be useful.

In the end, a great product that has been executed well. It is not perfect by any means the music could sound better, for one, but, considering this appears to be Levana’s second product, I think they have, hands down, got a winner.

UPDATE: After about a week of writing this review, I have had nothing but trouble with the camera and monitor. It keeps loosing its connection, and, in spite of the advice they gave me above, I have not been able to get it to work. As well, before, there was not much static coming through the monitor, now it has a constant sound coming through it in spite of my daughter sleeping.
