The problem is that majority of them are close in price so it is hard to make a choice on price alone. I found that when you think about all the factors like number of cores, mhz, cache and price, this is the best choice. It’s fast enough for the most calling for multimedia and games and has all the energy saving features so you will not waste energy while doing something like typing word papers. If you’re building strictly for gaming then you may want to most likely use up the extra $30 on the Q9550 though this one will do quite well if paired with a high end graphics card. On the other hand, if you’re building as a office type computer for email and word processing etc, you may want to most likely save the $20 and go with the E8400. This one is the ideal center ground for great performance at a great price!

While they may not air cool to 4+GHz like the Intel comparison of the 975 Quad, they do their jobs without the 5x pricetag. They’ll clock with stock air cool to 3.65GHz, and aftermarket cooler to 3.9GHz easily. Water cool for over 4Ghz. AMD makes great processors, I can testify to that, since the late 90’s. Gamez, Movies, Rips, heavy or lite jobs, these will do the trick. If you know a little about clocking your systems or just want to learn this is a great place to start if you mess one up, your ok cuz you still have four more processors to puchase before you reach the cash value of a Intel, lol.

    REAL NAME &nbsp,&nbsp, &nbsp,&nbsp, After purchasing pre built systems for some number of years, I broke down and built my own this time. I think it’s vital to set up how I’m using the processor, so here is my system.

    I paired this processor with an MSI 790GX G65 motherboard as the base of my new system. The other portions are one GB Hitachi HDD, LG DVD RW, PNY GEFORCE GTS 250 video card, Windows seven Professional, eight Gb DDR3 memory, Antec 300 case, and Antec Truepower Trio power supply. I have five case fans, four input and one output.

    Now, on to the processor itself.
    It comes with an “Approved” AMD heat sink. With aftermarket heat sinks, one has a separate tube of lubricant that goes over the CPU to seal the connection with the sink, but on this heat sink the sealer is applied to the base of the heat sink, which is convenient. This sealant looks a bit like thin cardboard at the base of the heat sink, do not be fooled, it’s supposed to be there and no extra paste is obliged. The heat sink is big, with lots of copper.

    Installing the processor is quite simple, so long as you remember to line the “notch” on one end of the processor with the “notch” on the CPU mount. Information are provided with the retail kit. Between those and the information that come with motherboards, you may want to dont have problem installing the CPU.

    The CPU has a “Cool N Quiet” mode, if your motherboard supports it. Mine does, and in this mode the processors there are four processor cores on the chip work at varying speeds, depending upon the task loading of each core. From what I can tell the speeds are , 2400, and 3400 Mhz. Using this feature, my CPU temperature is usually around 30 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature I have seen the chip at is 51 C. Note that the “cool N calm mode isn’t used when overclocking. The maximum operating temperature is 62 degrees C.

    Most motherboards have two memory modes: “Ganged” and “Unganged”. The default looks to be unganged. The difference is that in “unganged” mode the memory is split up such that each CPU core gets some total of memory, in my case, 2Gb per core. This mode is optimized for multiprocessing, whereas “Ganged” mode optimizes for one application. I talk about this here because this CPU excels at many tasks, by which I mean that I noticed a vast difference in performance from my last single core CPU, also a 3.4 Mhz. Running many applications is smooth. This makes it great for business applications where one is multi tasking constantly.

    The CPU pulls 140 watts at maximum speed, considerably less at the slower speeds. The point is that you need a good power supply, mine is a 550w variant.

    This model is a “black” variant, which means that the cores are unlocked and may be easily overclocked. I ran mine up to 3.8 without problems, but the temperature went to 40 degrees C at idle. Since I did not really see any in general improvement, I went back to stock speeds and “cool n quiet”. But if you’re into speed, this model can go to 3.9 or so stock after that I could recommend more violent cooling.

    The processor clocks at 7.4 on the Windows seven “Calculations Per Second” ratings. This ranking did not change despite of the over clocking, one of the reasons I went back to stock settings.

    I really looked for this unit when purchasing, though the lower models of the Phenom II X4 run at only somewhat lower speeds, and could make a good purchase. But for the price, the performance is great.

    I greatly recommend this product for anybody who needs a hard, reliable business processor. Pair it up with a good behind system and it’ll do well.

    REAL NAME &nbsp,&nbsp, I paired this CPU up with my Asus M4A79T. This was a big improvement from my old processor, the Pentium D 820. There’s many of head room when I got this to 3.6ghz easy. That was as far as I able to get stable on stock cooler, stock voltage. This is no i7 but it sure competes with the q9xxx series Intel CPUs. I hear this chip has a hard time going past 4.0ghz on air on a 64 bit OS. I’d have to attempt it out after I get a good heat sink fan.

    REAL NAME &nbsp,&nbsp, This CPU has been used for 1st build. The processor itself is easy to install, stock cooler was a little tougher.

    CPU is fast and able to run anything without a hiccup. When running a torture test I was still able to play songs in iTunes, watch a movie, or play a game without any hesitation from the processor.

    My only problem was when running prime 95 processor could creep above 60C with stock cooler, I thinked the thing was faulty and thought about returning it. Tried re seating the stock cooler and used arctic silver as my thermal compound instead. Still kept going above 60C.

    Decided to attempt under volting and was able to get the chip to idle under 40 and no higher than 54 at full load which alleviated my concern that I had a flawed product. Will be purchasing an after market cooler soon.

    Overall happy with my buy, processor performs well, I am not sure why anybody could want something faster.

    The i7 860 has all the hp you will need for fast picture editing and editing AVCHD videos. But what really is cool is how little power it uses when your only checking e mail and on the web. I built my desktop PC with this CPU and a Gigabyte GA P55A UD4P mother, Corsair 620HX power supply and a Western Digital 640GB “Blue” HD. For light responsibility task like web browsing it consumes just 65 Watts! When it really kicks in high gear for serious number crackling it goes to 110 Watts. This is the result of Intel’s Turbo technology that can turn off cores that aren’t in use. Plus if you give it a really good cooling system it can drive the clock rate up to the thermal bound. This capability to save power is so vital as it translates into less electricity, less wasted heat and sound and increased dependability. For me this was ideal since I wanted a computer that was super calm when running basics tasks but had the muscle for calling for applications when needed.

    This is a great CPU that will can handle anything you may be able to through at it and will not be out of date in some years.

    REAL NAME &nbsp,&nbsp, Love this I5 750. It is fast and cool. It runs under 50C under load in turbo @3.2G. Overclocked to 3.8g with stock heatsink. Change video and play HDTV with ease.

    Need to be cautious with the selection of DDR3. Firstly paired with A Data 2×2G and had random blue screens. Changed to Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 and problem solved.

    Stock heatsink is on the small side, but it did get the job done.

I have been building PCs for our family since the early nineties and I am pretty familiar with today’s hardware, and the common novelty rates over time. I used this processor to upgrade a two year old Intel Core two Duo E4500 2.2 GHz 2M L2 Chace 800MHz FSB LGA775 Dual Core Processor. The E4500 was comparatively fast at running Vista and Windows 7×64 but I needed more processing power for burning AVCHD pictures. The i5 certainly delivers faster video editing performance, but I was a bit disappointed at the general Windows seven performance. I’d say that boot time and normal functionings, like opening applications, shutting down, looking at multimedia content, etc., was only somewhat faster than the E4500. This processor was put with an ASUS LGA1156 Intel P55 DDR3 2133 ATX Motherboard P7P55D Deluxe motherboard, and 8GBs of low latency Patriot DDR3 PC3 12800 memory. The i5 is economical and very dependable, but simply did not deliver the performance increase I expected, particularly considering the chip set architecture enhancements of the LGA1156 platform. I do not play games, so possibly the enhancements could be more obvious there. The processor rates as 6.9 in the Windows seven Experience Index.

    Pros:
    Cheap, in comparison to faster i7 and i8 processors

    Cons:
    LGA1156 heatsink pins are somewhat differently spaced than LGA775 pins
    Not many LGA1156 coolers on the market as of Nov 09
    Stock cooler/fan was a bit noisy, more so than the stock LGA775 fans

    Would I buy this again? No, I’d use up more money and purchase the Intel Core i7 Processor 2.80 GHz eight MB LGA1156 CPU I7 860BOX
